Each guide trainer is allowed no more than six trainees. Training takes place on the Skagit River. Skagit River is actually famous for Bald Eagle Watch, the Nisqually River, the Wenatchee River, and the Skykomish River. Aside from experiencing bald eagle watching, you will also learn the following: reading Whitewater, rigging rafts, paddle and rowing techniques, commanding a paddle crew, equipment maintenance, river safety and much more! This course is very popular and class size is limited, so register early.
While in Whitewater guide training you will need to bring snacks, lunch and beverages. You will also need a Farmer-John style neoprene wet suit and booties. These can be purchased at outdoor recreational equipment stores, dive shops, or from WRT (at our cost). Everyone is responsible for his or her own transportation to and from the river. There are motels and campgrounds near each river, call or check the website for the appropriate list.
There is no guarantee you will be hired after completing the training in WA. If you have potential, but are not ready to guide, we will provide additional training for free. Wildwater hires guides with leadership ability, good attitude and work ethic, and who posses competent river skills and the ability to communicate effectively to all types of people. Washington State requires guides to be 18 years old and are First Aid/CPR certified (not required to participate in training). Wages are $65-$95 per trip depending on experience and advanced skills. Most river rafting guides have full-time regular weekday jobs and raft on weekends. For a great river rafting guide training experience, contact Wildwater River Tours.
