TIETON RIVER: WASHINGTON'S LAST SUMMER WHITEWATER RUN

Nicknamed the “last summer run”, the Tieton River roars to life when Rimrock Dam releases water to irrigate central Washington’s vineyards and world-famous hop farms. In fact, the Yakima Valley produces over 75% of the hops in the U.S., so you’ll pass scenic farmland on your way to the river’s launch point near Windy Point Campground.

As many rivers in the state dry up in late summer, the Tieton offers consistent flows, reliable rapids, and the best Class III+ rafting in September. Don’t miss your chance to raft this hidden gem — book your Tieton River trip with Wildwater today!

Tieton River Rafting: Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is the rafting season for the Tieton River?

The Tieton River has the shortest and most predictable season in Washington. It runs exclusively in September. This is known as the "Flip-Flop" season, when water is released from the Rimrock Dam to provide irrigation for the Yakima Valley’s famous hop farms and vineyards. Because flows are controlled by the dam, the Tieton delivers consistent, thrilling whitewater even when many other rivers in Washington have dropped to low late-summer levels.

2. Is the Tieton River good for first-time rafters?

Yes. The Tieton is a Class III+ river with fast, continuous whitewater and very few calm stretches, which makes it an exciting trip for both first-time rafters and experienced adventurers. Unlike many rivers that have long flat sections between rapids, the Tieton delivers a steady stream of wave trains and splashy rapids throughout the canyon. It’s a great choice for guests who want a high-energy rafting experience without stepping into advanced Class IV whitewater. The Tieton is a great option for both first-time and experienced rafters.

2. Where can I check the live Tieton River flows?

The Tieton's flow is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation. You can track the live discharge rates from Rimrock Lake (Tieton Dam) using these official links:

3. What is the whitewater classification of the Tieton?

The Tieton is a continuous Class III+ river. Because it flows through a narrow canyon, the water is fast and continuous with very few calm stretches. You will navigate non-stop roller coaster waves and exciting rapids such as High Noon, Waffle-Wall, and Wild Rose. It is often considered the most exciting "bang for your buck" trip in the state due to its 13 miles of nonstop action.

4. Is the water cold on the Tieton River?

Surprisingly, the water is often warmer than many Washington rivers. Unlike the glacier-fed rivers of the spring, the Tieton draws water from the surface of Rimrock Lake, which has been warming up all summer. The water is significantly warmer than the Wenatchee or White Salmon, and combined with the dry, sunny Yakima Valley weather, it makes for a very comfortable late-season adventure.

5. How far is the Tieton from Seattle and Portland?

The Tieton River is a perfect "end of summer" road trip destination.

  • From Seattle: 2.5 to 3 hours via I-90 and I-82.
  • From Portland: About 3 hours via the Columbia River Gorge and Highway 97. Our meeting location is near Hause Creek Campground at Milepost 168 on Highway 12.
