River Rescue Certification (RRC) - Washington Swiftwater Certification

A dynamic, scenario-based river rescue course written and designed by boaters, for boaters.

The River Rescue Course (RRC) at Wildwater is an intensive, 2-day hands-on safety program custom-tailored to the specific demands of the river corridor. Unlike standard industrial swiftwater courses designed for land-based emergency crews, our dynamic curriculum focuses entirely on practical, on-river execution. It is engineered specifically to address the safety needs of commercial river guides, private boaters, kayakers, packrafters, cat boaters, canoeists, riverboarders, and SUP paddlers.

Our experienced instructors will guide you through the essential skills needed for river rescue, including recognizing hazards, performing rescues, and understanding the principles of river hydraulics. Our curriculum is carefully designed to provide you with the knowledge and confidence necessary to make the right decisions and work effectively in a rescue team during high-pressure situations.

If you want to stay safe on the water, protect your crew, and know exactly what to do when a trip goes wrong, this is the definitive class you need to take.

Course Prerequisites for Students

To ensure a high-level training environment where we can maximize our time on the water, basic river skills are a prerequisite for this course. Before day one, participants must possess:

  • A solid, baseline understanding of river hydrology.
  • The ability to identify standard river features (eddies, eddy lines, standing waves, hydraulics, and holes).
  • The ability to comfortably navigate a watercraft in a minimum of Class II moving water.
  • Familiarity with basic rescue equipment, such as throw bags and carabiners.

By establishing this baseline upfront, our instructors don't have to slow down the class to teach fundamental paddling—allowing us to jump right into advanced safety and rescue drills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the River Rescue Course (RRC) and who is it designed for?

A: The River Rescue Course (RRC) at Wildwater is a DYNAMIC river rescue program specifically written and designed for river runners who need to know what to do if something goes wrong on the water. This comprehensive course directly addresses the real-world safety and rescue needs of commercial river guides, kayak instructors, private boaters, whitewater enthusiasts, and river runners of all crafts (Raft, Cat Boat, Kayak, IK, Packraft, Canoe, Riverboard, and SUP). It is the foundational class that anyone boating on any river, anywhere, should take as a critical safety prerequisite.

Q: What are the prerequisites for enrolling in the River Rescue Course?

A: Because we want to maximize our time on the water, basic river skills are a prerequisite for this course. Participants should already possess a baseline understanding of river hydrology, familiarity with standard rescue equipment (like throw bags and carabiners), and the ability to comfortably navigate a craft in Class II moving water. By ensuring everyone has these fundamental boating skills down on day one, our instructors can jump right into teaching high-level safety and rescue operations without slowing down.

Q: What specific skills are taught during the 2-day RRC program?

A: Our 2-day curriculum completely strips away the fluff and focuses entirely on practical, high-pressure execution with a core emphasis on hazard identification, rigorous risk assessment, and active RESCUE mechanics—focusing heavily on both self-rescue and the rescue of others. Rather than just memorizing drills, you will learn how to actively think through rescues under pressure.

The hands-on skills taught on the water and in the classroom are broken down into five core disciplines:

  • Advanced River Swimming & Contact Rescues: Master aggressive and defensive swimming techniques, barrel rolls, and accessing eddies in heavy current. Learn shallow water crossings, contact rescues for panicked passengers, and the proper deployment, release, and self-rescue techniques using a Live-Bait rescue jacket.
  • Pro Throw Bag & Line Techniques: Go beyond basic tossing. We drill the when and where of throw bags, including rapid re-coiling, belay setups, back-up positioning, zip lines, and executing vector pulls to maximize force.
  • Entrapment Prevention & Response: Learn life-saving extraction protocols for foot, body, and craft entrapments using coordinated wading, swimming, and technical throw bag tactics.
  • Rigging, Anchors & Mechanical Advantage: Build the technical foundation required to move heavy loads. We cover essential knots, hitches, and anchors, as well as setting up Z-drags and mechanical advantage systems to give your team the leverage it needs.
  • Boat Recovery & Dynamic Drills: Get the real scoop on freeing wrapped rafts and kayaks from rocks. You will actively execute full-scale flip drills, boat righting, and passenger recovery drills right in the current and rapids.

Additionally, the course utilizes the Heads Up curriculum to dial in trip prevention, gear preparation, and incident organization, paired with group tabletop scenarios to master the mental side of a crisis.

Q: What is the difference between a standard Swiftwater Rescue Course and your RRC course?

A: Standard swiftwater courses are often tailored for municipal emergency crews or fire departments, focusing heavily on land-based infrastructure and flood disasters. The Wildwater River Rescue Course (RRC) is a dynamic river rescue program written and designed specifically for river runners handling watercraft within a river corridor. It strips away the industrial fluff to focus entirely on the actual scenarios, hydrology, and gear that boaters use to manage real-world river emergencies.

Q: Does this course provide official Swiftwater Rescue certification?

A: Yes. Although the curriculum is custom-tailored to the specific layout of river running rather than industrial fire/rescue operations, this course meets all agency Swiftwater Rescue certification requirements for commercial river guides, kayak instructors, and agency personnel. Upon successful completion of the 2-day course, students receive an official River Rescue Certification through Sierra Rescue International, which fully satisfies the standard American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 4 Swiftwater Rescue benchmarks.
